Adults and suspension of disbelief
There was one thing I suspected about adults when I was a teenager and that was that adults are boring, and it turned out to be true.
As people around me reach their thirties I see a trend, even within the entertainment industry, to just have simple, down to earth stories, focused mainly on human drama. That mentality is also applied to the way we represent drama. Any visual effects to help enhance, dress up, stylize or liven up the story is seen as kitschy or gimmicky; an obstacle to credibility.
